And The Parts Of Devotion Fitted To All Occasions, And Furnished For All Necessities.
This 1883 facsimile edition combines the full texts of two great works of popular Anglican devotion, Holy Living and Holy Dying. Their author, Jeremy Taylor, was ordained an Anglican priest in 1633 and served as chaplain to King Charles I during the Puritan rebellion. Imprisoned and forced into exile under the Cromwell Protectorate, he produced these remarkable manuals of Christian practice in 1650-51, while living in obscurity. After the Restoration he rose to prominence again as an Irish bishop, and the Church of England commemorates him in its calendar of lesser saints. Taylor's majestic, musical prose style is often likened to that of Milton and Shakespeare, and Charles Wesley numbered himself among Taylor's many devoted readers down the centuries. Although possessed of a fine intellect, Taylor eschewed abstract theology, placing greater value on living a divine life than on divine knowledge. Accordingly, Holy Living provides practical guidance - obtaining virtues, opposing vice, fasting, confession, etc. - along with prayers and psalms suited to various occasions and needs. Holy Dying offers rules and exercises that guide the Christian in contemplating the imminence of death, in resisting temptations that accompany sickness, and in cultivating repentance, confession, patience, and faith. The richness, variety, and elegant prose of these classic works will delight and enlighten the modern reader. 525 pp.
