This is volume II and covers a history period of A. D. 30-150. The biographer of Paul is, it seems, very well provided with material, because he possesses in the letters of the Apostle infinitely rich documents of his innermost being. Paul is one of those few personalities of the past who appear before us clearly because he has not intentionally pictured himself in these sources, but without any thought of posterity has given himself to it as he was. There are few autobiographical monuments so valuable as the genuine letter of Paul. However we must note on limitation. Between us and the real Paul there stand all kinds of hindrances to a true understanding. There are not only the strange language and the difficulties of interpretation which in many places are almost too great to be overcome. Yet with Paul's desire to proclaim Christ we sure pure devotion and a willingness to lay down life to lead others to God through Christ.
